Homemade Hummus

A few months ago, amid a tumultuous time, my mom shared a snack tip with me! Her homemade hummus recipe! As a mid-life student, snack tips are always welcome, right?

It’s so great to cut up some fresh vegetables and dip them into the savory goodness of hummus. In fact, this goodness goes back into the depths of history. Is hummus Greek? Is it Egyptian? We might never really know. However, one thing is for sure – it’s delicious.

I like to serve hummus whenever Rob and I entertain. Historically, mine has generally been store-purchased. I didn’t realize that I could make it so easily, myself… AND much more affordably! For example, here’s a screen capture of my “hummus” search on Instacart. It costs a few bucks – nothing major, but still a few bucks.

Hummus ingredients are so simple! NO idea why it took me until 2020 to start making my own??!! A big ole bowl is just a can of garbanzo beans (only $0.59 at Wegmans), a clove of garlic, some oil, lemon juice and salt and pepper to taste. Many of us have these ingredients in our homes already. Why buy hummus at all?

My hummus version is described below. You’ll note that I indicate hot sesame oil. That’s because I love anything with a kick! If you prefer a traditional hummus, feel free to use regular sesame oil. I find that the hot sesame oil adds a nice spark and frankly, I now only make my hummus with hot sesame oil. It’s that good.

Well, here’s my recipe! I’d love to know what you think. Also, thanks mom for sharing your recipe… that I modified a wee bit to produce this one. I’m always grateful for great snack tips!
