Our First Ultra-Marathon Training Run

runningThis November, Rob and I will run 60K in the Nashville Ultra. Today was Day 1 of our Ultra-Marathon Training Run… we feel GREAT!

In 2012, Rob and I ran our very first 5K race; the story behind that is fit for another blog post. Overtime, our running evolved. We ran MANY 5Ks, 10Ks, multiple half-marathons, 2 marathons and a 50K ultra-marathon.

After a couple running injuries, we took a break to focus on healing so that we could come back stronger with a goal of another Ultra-Marathon.

Yes – we ran 5 miles through our beloved Percy Warner park. We made sure to reduce the amount of insulin we took at breakfast and suspended our insulin pumps about 30 minutes prior to the run and stayed hydrated throughout (this is a little routine that we have found that works for us). Being diabetics who love to run is a very careful balance.

Rob and I both wear the Medtronic Minimed 523 insulin pump with Continuous Glucose Sensor technology. It gives us the confidence to lead active lives and run long distances. Today, I got an alarm around mile 3 warning me of a “predicted low” blood sugar. So, we stopped, I had a small snack and we continued on our way. Historically, Rob and I have both required about 15 carbohydrates for every 3 miles of running to keep our blood sugars steady.

Rob and I were able to run 5 miles today (through the hills!) because we commit ourselves to staying fit. We are currently enjoying our second round of Insanity MAX30.  Prior to this we did the 21 Day Fix Extreme and developed incredible core strength (important for runners) with PiYo. This training positioned us perfectly for an incredible “first training run.” We’re so proud!!

What a GREAT day. So beautiful and refreshing just to be out, alive and running through the trails of Tennessee. Life is wonderful. Stay tuned for our progress toward our Ultra-Marathon goal.
