Press & Media
Laura C. Gee is the author of Sage Being Brave, a chapter book for ages 8 to 10 about friendship, Type 1 diabetes, and figuring out how to live bravely one ordinary day at a time.
Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age seven, Laura drew from her own childhood experiences to create Sage and the world around her.
Sage Being Brave
Sage is eight years old. She loves soccer, riding her bike, building blanket forts with her best friend Lucy, and spending time with her rabbit, Pumpkin.
A chapter book about friendship, Type 1 diabetes, and being a kid
Then one ordinary day, she’s diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
Suddenly, there are numbers to check, insulin to take, and things to think about that Sage never had to think about before. School feels different. Soccer feels different. Even a sleepover with her best friend feels more complicated.

About Laura
Laura C. Gee is a writer and communications professional who has lived with Type 1 diabetes since she was seven years old.

In 2026, she published her first children’s book, Sage Being Brave. She wrote the book because she wanted kids with Type 1 diabetes to see a character whose life includes diabetes without being defined by it.
Laura grew up in Jarvis, Ontario, and now lives in Maryland with her husband and their two Netherland Dwarf rabbits, Pumpkin and Spice. Outside of writing, she enjoys cooking, gardening, painting and running.
